Who can attend this event?

This program is open to everyone.

The teaching of the Buddha has two aspects: The elements of scripture and realization. These are maintained only through teaching And through practice. — Vasubandhu

In this 4-week workshop led by Edwin Kelley and Kunsang Palmo, we will explore Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakosha through Mingyur Rinpoche’s text Stainless Prajna. The Abhidharma is Buddhism’s comprehensive analysis of all possible experiences we can have in the mind and body. By understanding the intricate workings of the mind, we can unwind unhealthy habitual patterns and find true freedom from suffering. This workshop will focus on the practice of shamatha, helping us settle the mind through numerous skillful techniques.

Why should I attend?

Modern life — with its challenges and constant demands — can lead to a pervasive sense of stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. By exploring Buddhist psychology, you can gain a detailed framework for understanding the mind's inner workings, allowing you to identify the root causes of stress and anxiety. Through guided meditation practices, you can connect with your innate awareness and cultivate a more calm and clear mind.

What will I learn?

In this program, you will:

  • learn the core principles of Buddhist psychology
  • learn a variety of shamatha, or calm abiding, meditations

What is included in this program?

  • Teachings with Tergar guides
  • Live Q&A with Tergar guides
  • Large and small group discussions
  • Guided meditation practices

Requirements for participation: This program is open to everyone.

Please note: Because this workshop is intended to be an opportunity for the community to gather together in real time, we strongly encourage participants to attend the live sessions.  However, for those who cannot attend for any reason, recordings of sessions will be made available for 1 week following each session.

Can I get access to a recording of this event?

Edwin Kelley

Edwin Kelley first became interested in Buddhism in 1975 when he attended a meditation retreat near Perth, Australia. He later pursued a career as a public accountant and in 1992 went to Burma to undertake a six-month period of intensive retreat with the renowned meditation master Chanmyay Sayadaw. While practicing in Burma he ordained temporarily as a Theravada Buddhist monk. In 1994 he was hired as Director of Operations by one of America’s best known meditation retreat centers, the Insight Meditation Society (IMS), in Barre, MA. Eighteen months later he was appointed Executive Director of IMS and served in that capacity until 2003 when he resigned to pursue further long-term intensive meditation practice. Edwin first encountered Vajrayana Buddhism in Dharamsala, India in 1993 and became a student of Mingyur Rinpoche in 1998. He has a post graduate diploma in Buddhist Studies from the University of Sunderland in the UK. He moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife Myoshin in 2009 to help establish the global Tergar Meditation Community. In addition to his work as an instructor, he recently served as co-executive director for Tergar International, and he is currently the Interim Chief Financial Officer.
